REMEMBERING PETER JOHNSON

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Peter Johnson has recently passed away.

Many across the canal and wider ultra running community will feel this loss deeply. He was one of the true characters of the canal family, always smiling and always lovely company.

He will be remembered not only for his incredible GUCR record, but also for the conversations shared with runners along the way, the chats with support crews and members of the public, and the time he spent at checkpoints thanking volunteers while fuelling his extraordinary race appetite. He brought warmth, humour and kindness wherever he went, and truly embodied the GUCR spirit.

Following last weekend’s GUCR, it feels especially fitting that a new annual “Most Determined Runner” trophy will now be presented in his honour. It is hard to think of anyone more suited to it.

For many of us, the towpaths will feel a little emptier without Peter.

He will be greatly missed by so many friends in the canal and ultra running world.

This notice is shared on behalf of the canal family, with our thoughts and condolences to Peter’s family and friends.

If you would like to share a memory or favourite photo of Peter, please do so in the comments.

Bye Peter.
