31ST EDITION | GUCR 145

The GUCR 145 is a 145-mile ultra along the Grand Union Canal, following one of England’s most historic waterways from Birmingham to London. The canal is a stitched-together ribbon of industrial heritage and quiet countryside, running through towns, fields, and city edges, punctuated by locks, long straight pounds, and the occasional reminder that it was never designed with running in mind.

This year, it also happened to be the hottest edition of the event on record, which meant the canal behaved less like a scenic towpath and more like a slow-moving solar panel.

From Birmingham to London, across both days, the heat was constant. It quickly became less about pace and more about problem-solving: where’s shade, how much water is left, and how far it is to the next lock (always further than hoped).

Out on the course, everyone settled into their own version of survival mode, but there was a shared understanding running through it all—usually communicated with a nod, a half-smile, or the universal language of “this is fine.”

A tough, hot, and memorable GUCR 145 – defined by resilience, canal-side humour, and the collective art of just getting to the next bridge.

The results are below and event photos will flow like a canal boat over on our Facebook page, over the next few days.
